The jazz life in Umeå has a unique history that extends far more than half a century back in time. In many ways, it´s modern story was initiated during the 1960s when both groups and individual musicians won recognition far beyond the country’s borders. The crowning glory was the Umeå Jazz Festival, which started in 1968.
We round off this year’s festival with the 50th Edition Jazz Orchestra, which occupies Idun during the Saturday afternoon! This concert presents musicians who has taken great impression of our city’s music heritage but also written their own story and added their unique qualities.
The concert programme is based on music created by the city’s musicians, of legendary musicians who passed the revue at the festival, and on the documentation of images and recordings. Musicians like Berndt Egerbladh, Lars Lystedt, Thor Egerbladh, Eskil Columbus, Umeå Big Band, Sten Öberg, and Lars-Göran Ulander will figure together with leading artists from the new generation of musicians.
The ensemble is led by saxophonist and umeå born Jonas Knutsson and the house band is percussionist Mikael Emsing´s Trash Orchestra. Jonas was given free rein to create this concert which includes everything from solos, duos and small groups to big band format. We meet with prestigious musicians from different generations, musical traditions and expressions!
